Season 17 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia officially kicks off with its long-awaited premiere, “The Gang F*s Up Abbott Elementary,”** and I was lucky enough to attend an exclusive screening and cast Q&A at the Directors Guild of America in L.A. back on July 2, 2025

Key Highlights & Surprises
Charlie’s Reading Skills—Temporarily
Charlie Day revealed that while his character did learn to read at Abbott Elementary, it didn’t last long. As soon as he got home, Charlie reverted—huffing spray paint and forgetting everything he’d learned. So don’t expect a literary Charlie roaming around Paddy’s any time soon.
Iconic Green “Shirt” Returns
Charlie’s signature green garment is actually the same jacket from the pilot episode—repaired multiple times, now tighter than ever. There’s literally only one, making it a lovely touchstone of continuity.
Canon-Bending & Writer’s Insight
During the panel, Glenn Howerton pointed out a small continuity hiccup. The writers admitted that while some lines cause minor contradictions, they’re carefully weighed—sometimes preserved for canon, other times purposefully ignored in favor of comedy.

Production Cheek & Cast Antics
Frat-like Filming Vibes
The discussion took a revealing turn when Danny DeVito joked they partied every night on set—and were occasionally inebriated on-camera—and all with a wink and laugh.
Cameo Conversation on Crossovers
The cast admitted that while the Abbott crossover was front and center this season, they had plans for something even bigger involving The Golden Bachelor—all kept under wraps until recently. On future crossovers, they’re hoping to work with What We Do In the Shadows.
