Show Review: The Righteous Gemstones
Show Review: The Righteous Gemstones
With the 4th and final season around the corner. Here is our review of the show and the episode ratings so far.

The Righteous Gemstones is a dark comedy that masterfully blends satire, family drama, and over-the-top antics into a wildly entertaining series. Created by Danny McBride, the show delves into the world of a wealthy, dysfunctional televangelist family who preach prosperity gospel while grappling with their own greed, hypocrisy, and personal demons. With its sharp writing, stellar cast, and biting commentary on religion and capitalism, The Righteous Gemstones is a hilarious and thought-provoking ride.

The Gemstone family is led by patriarch Eli Gemstone (John Goodman), a charismatic but deeply flawed megachurch leader. His children—Jesse (Danny McBride), Judy (Edi Patterson), and Kelvin (Adam Devine)—are equally flawed, each bringing their own brand of chaos to the family empire. Jesse, the eldest, is a brash and self-serving heir apparent; Judy is a volatile and insecure middle child; and Kelvin, the youngest, is a naive yet ambitious youth pastor trying to carve out his own identity. Together, they navigate scandals, rivalries, and their own moral failings, all while trying to maintain their public image as God’s chosen messengers.

What makes The Righteous Gemstones stand out is its ability to balance absurd humor with genuine emotional moments. The show doesn’t shy away from exposing the hypocrisy of its characters, but it also allows them moments of vulnerability and growth. The performances are top-notch, with McBride, Goodman, Patterson, and Devine delivering some of their best work. The supporting cast, including Walton Goggins as Eli’s estranged brother-in-law, Baby Billy, adds even more depth and hilarity to the mix.

Visually, the show is a feast, with lavish sets, costumes, and cinematography that highlight the opulence of the Gemstone lifestyle. The soundtrack, featuring gospel and contemporary Christian music, perfectly complements the tone of the series.

Overall, The Righteous Gemstones is a bold, irreverent, and highly addictive show that skewers the intersection of religion, wealth, and power. It’s not just a comedy—it’s a sharp critique of modern society wrapped in a wildly entertaining package.

The Righteous Gemstones is a must-watch for fans of dark comedies and satirical storytelling. It’s bold, unapologetic, and endlessly entertaining.
