In a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, series creator Rob McElhenney opened up about the origins of one of the show’s most outrageous stunts: Frank Reynolds’ unforgettable couch escape in the 2009 holiday special, “A Very Sunny Christmas.” While the scene has long lived in fans’ memories as one of the most hilariously unhinged moments in TV comedy, its inspiration is even weirder.
“When we asked [Danny] to do it, he said, ‘Yeah!’” McElhenney recalled, adding that he showed DeVito a nature video of a giraffe giving birth and said, “I wanna recreate this.” Before the video even played, DeVito was all in.
The result? A disturbingly funny, oddly brilliant moment of television that became a defining image of Frank’s character—and a testament to DeVito’s fearless comedic commitment. No stunt double. No hesitation. Just pure, unfiltered weirdness.

It’s moments like this that keep Always Sunny fresh 20 seasons in. Whether it’s social satire, absurdist humor, or the grotesque physical comedy DeVito has mastered, the gang always finds new ways to surprise us.
