The show? A faux '90s or early 2000s legal drama called Philly Justice.
“We pretended we were on a fake TV show in the '90s called Philly Justice — or the early 2000s — and we all crossed our arms,” Poehler said. That moment quickly evolved into a group text thread where cast members fully leaned into the bit.
Kathryn Hahn, who guest-starred in 10 episodes of Parks and Rec, shared more about how it started. While on set dressed in business attire—likely for a courtroom scene—cast members including Rashida Jones, Adam Scott, and Paul Rudd looked like they belonged on a classic legal procedural. The joke took off from there.
“We had, like, businessy outfits on,” Hahn said. “I think we were going to court or something... And I don't know whose idea it was, but we were all in staggered stairs in front of what looked like a courthouse.”
They began texting as if they were actual actors on Philly Justice, speculating about the pilot’s success, character arcs, and behind-the-scenes drama. Hahn joked about playing a lawyer with a “tempestuous relationship” with Angie Martinez—played by Rashida Jones—adding, “I mean, I think you guys are lovers.”
Poehler fondly recalled the moment, saying, “I remember thinking, 'I can't believe how lucky I am that I'm working with people who want to also do this dumb thing.’ Fun dumb things to me are a love language.”
Philly Justice might not be real, but it’s a perfect example of the off-screen chemistry that made Parks and Rec so special.
